This is a wonderful piece, Penny. This is life. Beautiful and bitter and ugly. This is the one of the best “normal” shorts I’ve read in weeks. You are a very gifted writer with a very warm and generous heart. Thank you for this stellar story!
Oh wow. Thank you so much Ken. It’s been a tough day for me and that has really put a smile on my face. I appreciate your words massively. Thanks for taking the time
I absolutely love how you've drawn so much story, so much of a life, out of casual neighborly interactions on the lawn. Just beautiful, and my heart ached for Patty.
Ahhh Stephanie, thank you so much for reading this. I appreciate this feedback from you hugely and am chuffed you enjoyed it - AND thank you for your subscription! 🙏
I’m going to be diving into more of your work in the coming days. ✨
Ok, finally sitting down to immerse myself in the entirety of this piece. Penny, your prose have found an ache in my chest—one I have yet to pinpoint. I kept attempting to find a line, perhaps 'the line' that resonated with me most...but, alas, they all stuck to me. And then I came upon the very last one. Down to the final two words. (I cannot stop thinking about them.) Thank you for this stunning piece.
Ahhh Casey thank you so much. That means a lot. I’m so happy you enjoyed it -and I know what you mean about the last two lines. They just kind of appeared there, like that and I knew that was the end x
Loved every bit of this. The way you make everything so vivid. I can imagine myself there, a bit shamed that I want to look, to peek and see what comes out next. You also describe the mental distance between neighbours so well! Gosh.
Thank you for recording audio of your short story, I enjoyed listening along. Some of the descriptions bring humour to the piece, at one point to such an extent that I spat a laugh in surprise.
Good final paragraph. Endings, middles, possibilities, all there. Fab!

Love this Penny.
It’s great how you have managed to weave a story around a sight you just happened to see.
